Earth tones for dusty running gear and fenders

The package holds three oil paints named Earth, Dusty Earth and Earth Clay. Together they cover the range from rich damp soil through faded dust to a lighter clay deposit, so they can be layered over one another to create a transition between fresh and long-dried grime.

How oil differs from acrylic

The binder sets slowly and stays workable for a long time. The modeler therefore has plenty of time to blend a stain, soften its edges or wipe most of it away and leave only a faint veil on the surface. It is thinned with odorless mineral spirits, and a heavily thinned layer then works as a filter that unifies the tone of a whole part. It behaves best over a matte coat; on a gloss surface it tends to run into one spot.

Where the set comes in

A small help with dosing

It pays to put a drop of paint on a piece of cardboard first, which draws some of the oil out of it. The deposit then runs less and stays where you put it. The intensity can be pulled back at any time with a brush moistened in thinner, even after several hours, so the result can be tuned gradually with no risk of losing the coat underneath.

The set is for finishing a model that is already painted, so it comes in at the final stage of the build. The model itself, brushes and thinner are not part of the contents.
