RLM 66 – RC MARKER

The RC Marker pen in the RLM 66 shade

This pen from the RC Marker range carries a very dark gray tone listed under the designation RLM 66. The tip spreads the paint directly, so the pen is at hand at once and will manage even a single small element. It has its place on edges, on the small parts of instrument panels and seats and on repairs to spots where the previous coat missed.

What the RLM designation means

RLM is the system of color shades of the German air ministry, in which every shade carries its own number. RLM 66 is a very dark gray and modelers know it mainly from the interiors of German aircraft cockpits, where in the later part of the war it prevailed over the lighter RLM 02. A dark tone has one practical advantage on a model: the surfaces stay legible, whereas a pure black finish swallows detail.

How to work with the pen

• Let the applied paint dry between coats, otherwise the next pass will wipe it away.
• On small areas guide the tip in short strokes in one direction, not in circles.
• Try the shade out in a hidden spot before you touch a visible surface.
• Remove dust and grease from the surface before applying.
• Wipe the tip after work and close the pen carefully.
• The specific procedure for thinning, cleaning and clear coating is given by the manufacturer on the package.
