About product

Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf, a gold enamel metallic, 10 ml

Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf is a gloss gold metallic paint from the enamel range, that is a synthetic, solvent-based paint, not an acrylic. It is supplied in a 10 ml bottle and it is a modeling paint, not a kit. The X range at Tamiya denotes gloss shades, and the metal pigment gives the coat its characteristic gold sheen.

Enamel, not acrylic, and what it is thinned with

The paint is thinned exclusively with X-20 enamel thinner, without the letter A. Thinner X-20A belongs to the acrylics and must not be mixed with enamel. The X-12 shade is also produced in parallel in an acrylic variant, which is a different product with a different thinner, so when buying and restocking check that you have the enamel (synthetic) version. The wrong thinner will curdle the paint.

Working with a metallic, please read carefully

The metal pigment settles at the bottom of the bottle. Before every use, stir the paint thoroughly and at length, ideally right from the bottom, until it has an entirely uniform consistency; otherwise you will apply mostly binder without pigment and the coat will be dull and uneven. A metallic also looks considerably better on a smooth base: every sanding scratch or grain of the primer is emphasized in a gold sheen, so smooth the surface carefully first. Count also on the fact that a metallic coat is harder to overspray and harder to mask, as masking tape may show on it and further paint holds on it less well. Do the gold features at the end, therefore, after the surrounding colors are finished.

Use

  • Decorative features, ornaments and trim: historical ships, carriages, artillery
  • Fittings, brass and bronze components, frames and strips
  • Details on figures: buckles, buttons, braid, armor and jewelry
  • Airbrush as well as brush; for spraying it is thinned with X-20 thinner (the manufacturer gives roughly 2 parts of thinner to 10 parts of paint)

Why enamel

An enamel paint gives a smooth and durable surface with excellent adhesion, and thanks to its slower drying it flows out nicely under a brush, which on the small decorative features that are often painted by hand means a more even coat with no strokes. A gloss surface is at the same time a good base under decals. Enamels are also traditionally used as a medium for washes and panel lines over a cured acrylic base.

Who the paint is for

For builders of historical ships, carriages and artillery, for figure painters and for anyone who needs a quality gold metallic for decorative details.

Safety: a flammable liquid. It irritates the airways, so work in a well-ventilated area and use respiratory protection when spraying with an airbrush. Keep out of the reach of children. Thinner and tool cleaning: X-20.

FAQ

It is an enamel (synthetic) solvent-based paint, not a water-thinnable acrylic. The X-12 shade is also produced in an acrylic version, which is a different product with a different thinner, so do not mix them up.

Exclusively with X-20 enamel thinner (without the letter A). The acrylic thinner X-20A is intended for acrylics and must not be mixed with enamel.

The metal pigment is heavier than the binder and settles at the bottom of the bottle. Without thorough stirring right from the bottom you will apply mostly binder and the coat will be dull and uneven.

A metallic surface is harder to mask and to overspray, as masking tape may show on it. We recommend applying the gold features at the end, after the surrounding colors are finished, and working on the smoothest possible base.
