A plastic kit of the Japanese twin-engine trainer and liaison aircraft Tachikawa Ki-54 from the Czech brand Special Hobby. This release is aimed at the machines that ended up in foreign hands after 1945, so it offers schemes rarely seen on Japanese aircraft.
The Ki-54 came about as a general-purpose training aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. A pair of radial engines, a roomy fuselage and calm flying manners made it an ideal machine for training pilots, navigators, radio operators and gunners, but a transport version and a machine for maritime patrol also came out of it. The Allies gave it the code name Hickory. After the surrender the surviving examples passed to new users: they flew in French Indochina, in China and on the Korean Peninsula, and some were seized by the Americans. The decals in the box cover exactly such machines from American, French and Korean service.
This is a short-run mold, so it pays to test fit every part dry first and to clean the sprue gates carefully. Mask the cockpit glazing and the fuselage windows with precisely cut tape. Captured machines were often repainted in a hurry, so it is worth working here with an uneven finish, the original color showing through and wear on the edges. A matte coat at the end unifies the surface and settles the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
