Aircraft

Plastic aircraft model kits are where most modellers start, and where a good many of them stay. The shelves here run from First and Second World War fighters through Cold War jets to airliners, in every scale the hobby genuinely uses: cabinet-sized 1:144 at one end, the broad-shouldered 1:32 and 1:24 showpieces at the other. Some boxes hold nothing but styrene sprues, a decal sheet and instructions; better-equipped editions arrive with photo-etched parts and canopy masks already inside.

The guide below sets out how scale, edition and parts count change what a build asks of you, so the kit you choose matches the bench time you actually have.

What a plastic aircraft kit contains

An aircraft kit is a set of injection-moulded styrene parts held on sprues, a decal sheet and an instruction booklet. You cut the parts free, glue them, fill the seams and spray the camouflage. Richer editions add photo-etched parts, meaning a thin brass fret carrying detail too fine to mould, plus self-adhesive canopy masks; with basic boxings you buy those separately. The finished aircraft becomes a cabinet piece, the centrepiece of a diorama, or a competition entry.

How to choose an aircraft kit

Scale decides both shelf space and visible detail

The busiest choice by far is 1:72 aircraft kits, where a whole squadron fits on one shelf. Modellers who want a readable cockpit and crisp panel lines move up to 1:48 aircraft kits, and anyone after a single cabinet centrepiece looks at 1:32 aircraft kits. Airliner collectors go the other way, to the compact 1:144 aircraft kits. One more option sits between the classics: 1:35 aircraft kits share their scale with armour and figures, which makes airfield dioramas straightforward.

Experience and edition level

A first build goes best with a lower parts count and a simple two-colour scheme. Experienced builders tend to reach for editions that already include etch and masks, or for boxings offering several marking options on one sheet. The larger the scale, the more hours at the bench, and the less forgiving the finish becomes.

What is, and is not, in the box

Sprues, clear parts, decals and instructions are standard; masks, etch and pilot figures usually are not. Paint and glue are never included in an ordinary kit, so check the box contents before ordering and add what the build needs in the same basket.
