A kit of the twin-boom American Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter in the J-20 production form, in 1:72 scale from the Czech brand RS models. Thanks to its two tail booms and its central nacelle the Lightning has a silhouette that cannot be mistaken for anything else, and even in a smaller scale it stands out in a display case.
The P-38 Lightning was the only American fighter in production throughout the Second World War. Two Allison V-1710 engines with turbochargers housed in the tail booms gave it high speed and the ability to operate at great altitude. The armament was concentrated in the nose of the central nacelle, so the rounds flew in parallel and did not have to be converged on one point, which made aiming at longer range easier. The J version can be told at a glance by the deep chin intakes under the engines, where the intercoolers moved from the leading edge of the wing. The later production blocks used the space freed in the wing for extra fuel, and the Lightning thus became an escort fighter with long range.
With kits from smaller production runs, offer everything up dry first, and on a twin-boom layout that goes double: the booms, the wing and the tail surface have to be symmetrical, or the model will visibly twist. Finish the cockpit before you close the nacelle and count on weight in the nose because of the nosewheel gear. A natural metal finish needs a perfectly smooth surface underneath, as every scratch will stand out under it.
