An injection-molded plastic kit of the twin-engine A-10 Thunderbolt II ground-attack aircraft in 1:48 scale from the American Monogram brand. The nickname Warthog in the name is more established among users and modelers alike than the official name of the type. In 1:48 scale the model comes out large, with spreading wings and a prominent silhouette, so it shows well in a display case and offers a large area for work with camouflage and weathering.
The A-10 is a single-seat aircraft designed from the start for a single task, that is, for the direct support of ground units from low altitude and at low speed. The whole design matches that. Two turbofan engines are placed high on the sides of the rear fuselage, where they are protected and draw in less dust from unpaved surfaces, the tail surfaces are twin and the straight wing of large area allows long loitering over an area. The pilot's compartment is protected by an armored tub. The dominant feature of the design is the seven-barrel 30 mm rotary cannon built into the forward fuselage, around which the aircraft was literally built. The type arose in the 1970s and thanks to several modernizations stayed in service unusually long.
Finish the cockpit with the armored tub before the fuselage is closed up. Try the engine nacelles and their pylons dry, so that both engines sit at the same angle, as otherwise it is immediately visible on the finished model. Leave the stores and any pylons separate and fit them only after the undersides of the wings have been painted and varnished. The gray camouflage of this type is sprayed with an airbrush in thin coats, and do the transitions at a lower pressure. Large areas call for fine shading, that is, an imperceptibly lighter spraying into the middles of the panels. Do the weathering with restraint, a dark wash into the engraved lines and light wiping in the direction of the airflow. Spray a glossy intermediate coat under the decals and finally unify the surface with matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
