An injection-molded plastic model of the American carrier fighter Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat in the large 1:32 scale from the Trumpeter brand. The large format lets the rich engraved surface detail come into its own and makes it possible to build the folding wings that marked out the F4F-4 version. The package offers a finely rendered radial engine and a well worked out cockpit, so it pays to paint the interior and the powerplant before you close the fuselage and fit the cowling.
The Wildcat was the main carrier fighter of the US Navy and the Marine Corps in the opening phase of the war in the Pacific. The F4F-4 version brought folding wings to save room on aircraft carriers and an armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns in the wings. It was powered by the air-cooled radial engine Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp. A characteristic feature was the hand-cranked landing gear, which the pilot wound up into the fuselage with a crank. Despite its poorer performance against Japanese fighters, the Wildcat proved itself through its toughness and became the mainstay of the defense in the fighting of 1942.
Glue the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic, and fill and sand the seams if necessary. In the large 1:32 scale it pays to finish and paint the cockpit and the radial engine first, and only then to close the fuselage and fit the engine cowling. Mask the canopy glazing so that the frames stay clean. Apply a primer before painting, lay the colors on with an airbrush in thin coats and bring out the panel lines with a wash.
