An injection-molded plastic kit of the American medium bomber Martin B-26 Marauder in 1:48 scale from ICM. This is not an ordinary boxing: it represents one particular historic aircraft, the very last Marauder to come off the production line. It was a machine of the late B-26G version, completed in April 1945, which was given the nickname Tail End Charlie (pilot slang for the last one in a formation). It first flew on April 18, 1945, and so symbolically closed several years of production of the whole family. After the German surrender it was handed over to the French Air Force, served at a test establishment and was written off only in 1949. The package contains a rich interior, detailed engines, masks for the glazing and decals for this one particular machine. The finished model has a wingspan of about 45 cm.
Choosing between two Marauders from ICM? This one is a collector and commemorative piece, one particular aircraft, the end of production, the late G version. If you want instead a typical operational bomber, reach for the B-26C-45 Marauder boxing; that is an ordinary production machine from the most numerously built version.
The Martin B-26 Marauder was a fast twin-engine medium bomber with a small, highly loaded wing. That gave it a high landing speed, and because there were accidents in early training it earned nicknames such as widowmaker. The reality was the opposite in the end: after training was improved and the airframe modified (a larger wing and tail surfaces, and on the late versions a changed wing incidence), the Marauder achieved the lowest combat loss rate of all American bombers in Europe, under half a percent per combat sortie. The B-26G was the last production variant, and the aircraft in this package belongs to it.
Glue with thin cement for plastic. Finish and paint the interior and the engines before you close the fuselage and the nacelles. Hold the large fuselage and wing parts in clamps while they dry and try the fit dry. Do not forget the nose weight; the aircraft stands on nose gear. Use a primer, spray the camouflage with an airbrush and make use of the supplied masks for the glazing. Lay down a gloss coat under the decals and a flat coat over them once dry. Given the size and the part count, this is a build for more experienced modelers.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
