American Eagles from RAF Lakenheath on an Xtradecal 1:72 sheet bring markings for models of the fighter and the strike version of the F-15 on British soil.
Responsibility details are not available.
The base in eastern England is a rewarding subject for modelers, because two different versions of the same type met there for many years. Xtradecal has devoted a joint sheet in 1:72 scale to them, so a builder can put together a pair of machines from one place and one period.
Lakenheath has been the main European stronghold of the US Air Force in Great Britain since the Cold War and is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. The two-seat strike version of the Eagle arrived here at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s and flew from it into most deployments in the Persian Gulf and the Balkans. The single-seat fighter version held air superiority duties alongside it until a new generation of machines took over. The difference between the two is obvious on a model at first glance, from the shape of the cockpit to the stores along the fuselage.
Modern aircraft carry a great many small stencils and applying them takes more time than the whole rest of the build. Split the work into stages, let the surface dry after each one and do not handle the model in the meantime. Fingerprints on a fresh film cannot be put right afterward.
What is sold is the markings on their own, not a whole model.
