This kit from Revell captures the American heavy tractor with a trailer of the kind used during the Second World War to carry and recover tanks. Scale 1:76 matches the usual standard of British vehicle ranges, so the combination fits easily into railway and military scenes alike.
The combination designated M19 consisted of a three-axle Diamond T tractor and a substantial semi-trailer with loading ramps. The British Army took it in large numbers and used it from the North African campaign through Italy to the fighting in northwest Europe. The tractor had a winch with which a damaged vehicle could be pulled onto the load bed even when it could no longer move under its own power. Even without a load the combination weighed tens of tons, so maneuvering it along narrow European roads was difficult.
Work from the frame and the running gear, because once the body is closed over them they are hard to reach. Small parts at this scale fly off easily, so work over a surface with a raised edge. Pick the cab and the load bed out with a dark penetrating stain and the edges with a dry brush, and pigment will then add dust on the chassis. A fine paste will polish the cab glazing, and after it even the small engraving of the wipers stands out.
