About product

Revell 51 Ultramarine - a Synthetic Enamel Paint, 14 ml

A shade from the Revell Email Color range. It is a solvent-based synthetic (enamel) paint, not an acrylic: it is not thinned with water. Revell Color Mix or mineral spirits serve as the thinner. The bottle holds 14 ml and the surface is gloss. The paint can be applied with a brush and with an airbrush, it can be recoated after about 4 to 6 hours and it cures fully in 24 hours. It is a modeling paint, not a kit.

What the shade looks like and how it differs

Of all the blues in the range, ultramarine is the most pronounced and the most saturated: a deep, clean blue with a slight leaning toward violet and high color intensity. Against the light blue (50) it is incomparably more saturated, against the basic blue (52) it has more energy and depth, and unlike the night blue (54) it stays unmistakably and legibly blue even though it is dark. When a blue has to be visible across a whole display case, this is the right one.

Use

  • Racing and sports finishes: cars, motorcycles, bodies with a pronounced blue.
  • Civilian vehicles where blue is the main body color.
  • Decoration, stripes, sponsor areas and color accents.
  • Mixing your own shades, as a saturated base for darker and lighter blues.
  • Small details where a clean, unfaded blue is needed.

Application tips

Saturated and darker shades cover better on a gray or dark base; on white plastic without a primer the first coat can look uneven. On gloss car bodies it pays to sand the base carefully and lay on several thin coats with an airbrush, since enamel levels the surface into a high gloss by itself. Let the finish cure for at least a day before decals.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of cars and motorcycles, builders of civilian vehicles and anyone who needs a saturated blue with high intensity, whether as the final finish or as a base for mixing a shade of their own.

A note: a flammable liquid. It irritates the airways, so provide good ventilation and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

Very. It is the most intense blue of the Revell basic four (50, 51, 52, 54): deep, clean and leaning slightly toward violet. It is used where blue really has to catch the eye.

Yes. The shade is gloss and after thin coats laid on with an airbrush it gives a smooth finish. Let the surface cure for at least 24 hours before decals.

With Revell Color Mix thinner, or with mineral spirits. It is not an acrylic, so it cannot be thinned or washed with water.

Yes, the shades of this range are mixable with one another. Thanks to its saturation, ultramarine is a good base for creating blues of your own.
