About product

Revell 95 Bronze, a metallic enamel paint (14 ml)

Revell 95 Bronze is a modeling paint, not a kit. It belongs to the Revell Email Color range, which is a synthetic enamel (solvent-based) paint, so not an acrylic. It is thinned with Revell Color Mix thinner or with mineral spirits and is applied with a brush as well as with an airbrush. The shade is a metallic bronze: a warm metal tending toward red with a fine metallic sheen, which gives the surface the look of a casting or of polished bronze fittings.

Use

  • Fittings, hinges, railings and ornamental elements on models of historic ships.
  • The barrels and parts of historic guns, ships' bells, statues and monuments on dioramas.
  • Details on figures: buckles, clasps, and the hilts and grips of bladed weapons.
  • Bearings, gears and older machine parts where a colored metal should show.
  • A base for patina: a dark wash settles into bronze superbly and brings out the relief.

How to work with metallic paint

The metal pigment is heavier than the binder and sinks to the bottom of the jar. Stir the paint right down to the bottom before every use, until the dense sediment has dissolved completely, otherwise you will apply mostly binder without any metal. Metallic paint is also unforgiving toward the surface underneath: every scratch, every mark left by abrasive paper and every unfilled seam shows up more strongly under metal particles than under an ordinary opaque paint. So smooth the surface carefully first and lay a smooth, rather glossy base under the bronze. Reckon with the fact that metallic paint is also hard to overspray and hard to mask: leave it until the end of the painting and peel the masking tape off carefully so that it does not tear the coat away.

Who it is for

For builders of historic sailing ships and artillery, for collectors of figures and for anyone who needs a convincing colored metal where silver would look cold. An enamel paint forgives slower work with a brush, so even a beginner can handle it.

A flammable liquid. The vapors irritate the airways: work in a well-ventilated area and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

It is not. Revell Email Color is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base. It is thinned with Revell Color Mix thinner or with mineral spirits, not with water.

Almost always because it has not been stirred enough. The metal pigment sinks to the bottom of the jar, so from the top you pick up mostly binder. Stir right down at the bottom until the sediment has disappeared completely.

You can, but it is risky: metallic paints are harder to overspray and the tape may tear the coat away. We recommend applying metallic paint at the end of the painting and peeling the tape off carefully and slowly.

A smooth and rather glossy one. Metal particles emphasize every irregularity more than opaque paints do, so sand and fill the surface first.
