The shade Mr. Color FS36231 gray is the darker gray from the palette of American naval aviation. The package contains 10 ml of lacquer paint intended for spraying with an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
The shade carried under the number FS36231 is known as dark gull gray. The US Navy used it for decades on the upper surfaces of carrier machines, while the underside stayed white. Skyhawks, Phantoms and second-generation Corsairs flew in this two-color finish, and the same gray appeared on flight deck equipment.
The paint is not water-thinnable; it is a lacquer type with an organic solvent. The surface is dry to the touch in a few minutes and hard enough within a short time. That is exactly what helps with schemes that have a boundary between two colors, where masking tape is laid on soon after spraying and must not lift the film when pulled off. The bottle holds ten milliliters.
Reach for the thinner of the same brand, either the ordinary one or the Leveling version, which extends the flow-out time and refines the texture of the coat. Fine-tune the consistency in a range from one part thinner to one part paint down to half that dose. Stir the contents of the bottle with a stick or mixing balls, as shaking alone is not enough.
Besides this gray, the naval scheme also involves white on the lower surfaces and gloss-finished elements such as warning stripes or engine covers. The course of the boundary between the upper and lower color differs from type to type, so follow the drawing of the particular machine.
Aircraft operating from a deck age quickly. Salt water and frequent washing leave the gray faded into uneven patches, dark traces stay around the filler ports and walkways, and flaked paint reveals bare metal. It is therefore worth playing with the base tone after spraying, so that the surface does not look like a fresh new coat.
