A round styrene rod 2.5 mm in diameter. A heavier profile for masts, funnels, posts and coarser piping. It can be worked with ordinary modeling tools.
Responsibility details are not available.
Two and a half millimeters is no longer a detail but a structural element. In this diameter the profile is used wherever a separate cylindrical shape that carries itself is meant to be visible on the model. The difference from thinner rods shows mainly when working the material: it can be filed, drilled and let in without any risk of snapping.
In ship modeling it becomes the lower sections of masts, topmasts, the funnels of smaller vessels and mooring bollards. On dioramas it serves as a power line pole, a lamp base, a fence post or the beam of a shelter. On ground vehicles it matches heavier piping, a hydraulic cylinder or the body of a damper. It also works as an internal stiffener that strengthens a hollow superstructure from the inside.
Because the material is polystyrene, it behaves exactly like the plastic of a kit. Liquid cement for plastic models holds it, it sands at the same rate as the surrounding parts and it takes the same primer and paint. An axial hole can be drilled into the rod without trouble to create a hollow tube, for example an exhaust funnel or the mouth of a stack.
A note on shaping: cold bending no longer works reliably in this diameter, the material either breaks or flattens in the bend. If you want a curve, heat the rod evenly with warm air along the whole length of the bend and shape it slowly over a rounded edge. Rapid heating with a spot source ruins the surface and leaves shiny marks that have to be sanded away.
