About product

Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow (Enamel) - matte enamel paint, 10 ml

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow comes from the enamel (synthetic) line - it is a solvent-based paint in a bottle of 10 ml. At Tamiya the letters XF mean a matte shade, so the surface does not stay glossy once dry. The shade is a light desert yellow pulled toward sand. The manufacturer recommends it for British vehicles in desert finish - that is, for vehicles deployed in North Africa and in dry, desert environments generally, which includes the later conflicts in the Middle East.

Careful: enamel, not acrylic

Tamiya issues the shade number XF-59 in two parallel lines. This item is the enamel - a solvent-based (synthetic) paint thinned with X-20 thinner (without the letter A). The acrylic version of the same number is water-thinnable and uses X-20A. The thinners cannot be swapped; before mixing, always check which line you are holding.

Use

  • Airbrush and brush. For spraying, thin the paint with X-20; the manufacturer's starting ratio is roughly 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint.
  • Light yellow and sand shades cover less well - it pays to apply them over a light primer and in several thin coats, otherwise the plastic shows through.
  • Before applying decals, give the surface a coat of gloss clear; on a matte surface decals do not adhere properly and a white film appears around the carrier film. The matte look comes back with the final clear coat.
  • The shade is ideal as a base for dust pigments and light washes - desert vehicles live off a layer of dust, not off clean paint.
  • Do not apply lacquer clear coats directly onto enamel that has not dried through - the layer may be damaged.

Who the paint is for

For builders of military vehicles and desert dioramas who work with synthetic paints and appreciate their smooth surface, which brushes well. Usable in every scale, on armor, wheeled vehicles, figures and accessories.

Safety: flammable liquid. The vapors irritate the airways. Use only in well-ventilated spaces, provide respiratory protection (a respirator) and protect your skin and eyes. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

It is a desert yellow. The manufacturer recommends it for British vehicles in desert finish, that is, for vehicles deployed in North Africa and in dry, desert environments generally.

Light yellow and sand shades generally cover less well. We recommend a light primer and several thin coats instead of one thick one - the result will be more even, without the plastic showing through.

Yes, at Tamiya the XF prefix means a matte shade. Under decals the surface therefore has to be given a coat of gloss clear first, and the matte look is restored with the final clear coat.
