About product

Photo-etched access ladders for the MiG-15 and MiG-17 in 1:144 scale

The set holds access ladders in two patterns. They are etched from thin sheet, bent into a three-dimensional shape and, on a finished model, lean against the side of the fuselage or stand on their own next to the aircraft. It is not a model or a kit; it is an accessory for a model and for a diorama scene, made by the Czech brand Brengun.

The real subject

The MiG-15 and MiG-17 are Soviet jet fighters of the late 1940s and the 1950s with a swept wing and a single-seat cockpit. The cockpit sits high above the ground, so a pilot boarded it by a portable ladder hooked onto the side of the fuselage. More than one pattern of ladder was used depending on the production batch and the operator, which is why the set offers two patterns.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Cut the part out of the fret with a scalpel on a hard surface, not with scissors, as those will ripple the metal. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two razor blades. Bend the rungs gradually, one after another, not all at once. If the material is too springy and will not hold its shape, warm it briefly over a flame and let it cool, which softens it. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer, as paint otherwise does not hold on smooth metal. A finished ladder is brought to life by a dark wash run into the recesses and a light dry brush in a paler shade on the edges. Because of the size of the parts, work with tweezers over a light surface.

Who the set is for

  • builders of MiG-15 and MiG-17 models in 1:144 scale
  • makers of dioramas and scenes with an airfield hardstand
  • modelers who already have experience of bending photo-etched parts
  • those whose displayed model lacks the surrounding ground equipment

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The aircraft model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The box holds two patterns of the ladder.

A photo-etch bending tool makes the work much easier, but two razor blades and a straight edge will do. What matters is bending gradually and on a sharp line.

Degrease the metal with alcohol first, apply a thin primer and only then the paint. Without a primer the finish rubs off smooth metal.

The ladders are designed for the MiG-15 and MiG-17. On other types they can only be used as general airfield equipment in the background of a scene; a match in shape is not guaranteed.
