Material for masking the two-part canopy of the American F-4 Phantom II fighter in 1:48 scale. The pieces sit on the frames from outside and inside and are cut to the Academy kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The McDonnell F-4 came about as a carrier interceptor for the US Navy and nobody originally expected the career that followed. Two powerful engines, radar, a crew of two and the ability to carry an enormous load of weapons made it a machine the US Air Force, the US Marine Corps and eleven other countries took up as well. Over 5000 were built. Its recognition features remained the anhedral horizontal stabilizers and, conversely, the upturned wing tips, a shape that came out of aerodynamic tests and not from an aesthetic intention. Over Vietnam the aircraft handled roles from fighter to radar destroyer.
The canopy of the Phantom consists of two separate hinged sections over the pilot and over the weapon systems operator, both with prominent framing. The cut pieces are applied to the glass and the edge of the paint then runs along the frame without teeth and with no need for corrections by brush.
The hinged sections are often built open so that a well-worked cockpit is visible. In that case it makes sense to mask the inner edge of the frame as well, because it is then clearly apparent on the model close up. The large glazing of the Phantom also readily gives fingerprints away, so it pays to take the clear part with tweezers or through a soft cloth.
