About product

Steyr 1500 in 1:72 scale

A plastic kit of the Steyr 1500 heavy military car in 1:72 scale from the Czech brand MAC Distribution. The parts are injection molded in plastic and the package is completed by photo-etched sheet and a decal sheet. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Steyr 1500 was a heavy field car from the Austrian maker Steyr, built from the beginning of the 1940s and used by the German armed forces during the Second World War. It was powered by an air-cooled V8 gasoline engine, an unusual choice in this class; air cooling simplified running in frost and in dust and did away with any worry over coolant. The car was produced in several versions, from a command and troop carrier to a variant with a flatbed body, and it was deployed on the European battlefields and in the rear areas alike. The basic design stayed common to all: all-wheel drive, independent suspension and a sturdy ladder frame.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the parts are tiny, so plan the build in subassemblies: first the frame with the axles and the drive train, and only then the body and the cab. Paint the interior before you close the cab up, otherwise you will no longer reach it. Shape the photo-etched parts, for example the radiator grilles, on a smooth surface and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. Before the decals, go over the areas with gloss clear coat and once it has dried unify the surface with a matte one. Weathering comes last: a dark wash into the seams and the engraved lines, a dry brush on the edges and pigments for mud and dust effects in the wheel arches and on the wheels.

Who the model is for

  • modelers of military equipment in 1:72 scale
  • collectors of less usual wheeled vehicles of the Second World War
  • diorama builders who are short of an escort vehicle for their tracked equipment
  • modelers with experience of photo-etched parts and delicate work

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
