About product

The German A7V tank (Krupp) 1:35 - a Meng kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Meng. It captures the variant with the hull from the Krupp company, on which the side armor plates were made up of several pieces and riveted together - which is exactly why this tank has such conspicuous riveting, faithfully reproduced by the kit. Besides the plastic sprues the package contains photo-etched metal, cable, decals and movable (working) track links. The interior of the fighting compartment and the driver's position are reproduced as well, and the hatches and vision ports can be built open or closed. The manufacturer gives the length of the assembled model as around 229 mm with a width of roughly 100 mm - for such a boxy hull that is an impressive piece for a display cabinet.

The real subject

The A7V was the only German tank of the First World War that reached series production - and even so only about twenty of them were built. It was an enormous boxy armored crate on a chassis with two engines, weighing around thirty tons. Quite exceptional was the crew: roughly 18 men (in some cases even more) - the most numerous tank crew in history. The vehicle carried a gun at the front and several machine guns around its sides. The A7V went down in history on 24 April 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux, where the first tank-versus-tank action took place - German A7Vs met British Mark IVs there.

Building and painting tips

First finish and paint the inside of the hull and the running gear - once the armor is closed up you will not get to them any more. Prepare and paint the movable track links separately, and only then fit them. Use liquid modeling cement (solvent type) on the plastic and glue the photo-etched parts with super glue. A primer is crucial on a kit with so many rivets - it evens the surface out and the rivets then stand out beautifully. A playful multi-color camouflage with dark outlines suggests itself; highlight the edges and rivets with a dry brush, bring the recesses and the riveted seams to life with a wash and add pigments to the lower hull as a muddy patina from a battlefield churned into mud.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in the equipment of the First World War and the very beginnings of tank forces
  • Collectors whose display cabinet lacks a counterpart to the British rhomboids
  • Builders of dioramas of the Western Front in 1918 (it goes splendidly together with figures in 1:35)
  • More experienced modelers who will appreciate the interior and the working track links

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The designation refers to the maker of the hull. The side armor plates from the Krupp company were not of one piece - they were made up of several parts riveted together, so the hull has markedly different riveting and division than with plates from other production. Meng models this variant deliberately.

They are individual plastic links, and movable at that - once assembled the track really works and can be made to sag naturally over the running gear. There is no rubber (vinyl) track in the package.

Yes. Photo-etched metal and a reproduced inside of the fighting compartment and the driver's position are included. The hatches and vision ports can be built open, so the interior can be shown.

Rather for a modeler who has already built something. The interior, the photo-etched parts and the individual track links call for patience and for planning the sequence (what to paint before the hull is closed up).
