Shade 74 is designated Gunship-Grey (USAF) by the manufacturer. It is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base (not an acrylic) with a matte surface, in a jar with a volume of 14 ml. It is thinned with Revell Color Mix or with mineral spirits, never with water. It is applied with a brush as well as with an airbrush and does not attack the plastic surface of a model. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.
This is the only one of the four grays with a specific aviation purpose. Gunship Grey is a dark gray tone associated with US tactical aviation, with modern combat aircraft and their low-visibility schemes, in which bright colors and bold markings were replaced by muted grays. It is not greenish like 67 nor stony like 69. It is an aviation gray, coldly dark.
With low-visibility schemes what matters is modulation, not contrast of colors: the scheme itself is dull and the paneling has to bring it to life. Overspray the panel lines with a darker mix, lighten the middle of each panel with 74 lightened by a paler gray, and keep the difference subtle. Apply a gloss varnish before the decals and restore the matte surface afterward.
