Pig — an animal figure 1:35 (MAiM)

This is a separate animal figure in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MAiM. It is not a kit and not a diorama structure, but a single animal with which you complete a farm scene. The manufacturer also offers a similar motif in sets with a sty or with more than one animal, so you can choose whether you need a single animal for an empty spot or a whole pen.

The subject

A single animal is a thrifty and surprisingly effective element in a vignette. It fills an empty spot that would otherwise look dead, and at the same time it serves as a scale: from a pig a viewer estimates the size of a building, a fence or a vehicle in the scene at once. The motif is neutral both in period and geographically, so it suits vignettes from various eras and settings, from an interwar village to a present-day farm.

Building and painting tips

Wash the figure in lukewarm soapy water before painting and let it dry. Sand the parting seams gently, so that they do not disturb the smooth skin. Build the base on a pinkish flesh shade, put a thin brown wash into the folds and between the legs and pick the back out gently with a dry brush. Make the mottling with thinned paint and soft transitions; a sharp edge looks unnatural in this scale. Only suggest the snout, the ears and the eyes with a thin brush. Finally add mud on the lower part of the body and on the legs and so join the figure to the terrain of the base — without that an animal in a scene always looks as if it were stuck on.
