A vacuum-formed clear canopy for the two-seat Sukhoi Su-7UMK from the Kovozavody Prostejov kit in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Su-7UMK was a training modification of the Soviet supersonic fighter-bomber prepared for foreign users. The second station was created by lengthening the front part of the fuselage and brought the characteristic long glazing divided into two. The instructor sat at the back somewhat higher, so as to be able to see anything at all over the pupil's head, and the spine of the aircraft behind the cockpit was given a bulge the single-seat version does not have. The machine kept its full armament and performance, so it served at the same time as a fully capable combat aircraft.
The part is made by drawing a thin clear film over a mold. The wall is much thinner than on an injection-molded part from a kit, thanks to which an open canopy can be shown without the frame coming across like a window sill. The clarity also tends to be better.
First trace the outline with a soft pencil. The film is then separated by circling a sharp scalpel and sanded to fit on fine paper laid on a flat board, until the part seats exactly. Proceed in small steps: you can always take material away, never add it.
Use a glue intended for glazing or a thin white glue that does not cloud the surface. The frames are masked with narrow strips of tape cut along a ruler, or with a liquid mask applied with a brush. Fingerprints on the finished part show up under a clear coat, so handle it wearing a glove.
It pays off most on a build where you want to show both seats and the instrument panels. With the canopy closed the difference from the part in the Kovozavody Prostejov kit is noticeable but smaller, and the cutting calls for a steady hand.
