About product

Nakajima A6M2-N Type 2, the Rufe float fighter, 1:48, Hasegawa

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. The real subject is the A6M2-N float fighter, that is the seaplane conversion of the well-known carrier fighter, which the Nakajima company produced. The boxing is aimed at the markings of the Sasebo Flying Group. 1:48 scale is rewarding on this type, because the float struts and the intricate cockpit stand out.

The real subject

The A6M2-N came about by converting the single-seat A6M2 fighter into a float aircraft. A large central float on struts under the fuselage and a pair of smaller stabilizing floats under the wing replaced the landing gear, and a vertical surface under the rear fuselage was added for the sake of stability. The conversion made it possible to operate from stretches of water where there were no prepared airfields. The price was a noticeably lower speed and worse agility compared with the original machine. In Japanese service the type carried a designation as a Type 2 navy float fighter, and the Allies assigned it the code name Rufe. The designation of the flying group refers to the naval base the unit was listed with.

Building and painting tips

The geometry of the floats is the key to a good result. Only tack the struts with glue, line the assembly up looking from the front and from the side and let it cure on a flat surface, and only then firm the joints up. Finish the cockpit and the instrument panel before closing the fuselage up and mask the glazing. Spray the paints with an airbrush in thin layers; on this type two different shades on the upper and lower surfaces with a soft transition are usual, which can be done freehand or by masking on thin rolls. Lay gloss varnish on under the decals. Do chipped paint on the leading edges and around the cockpit sparingly, as seaplanes operated from water tend to be stained rather than rubbed down to bare metal. The model suits being set on a stand or on a base with a water surface.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Japanese naval aviation in 1:48 scale.
  • For modelers with an interest in float aircraft and seaplanes.
  • For the intermediate builder who can line the float struts up.
  • For building a display case piece with a base imitating a water surface.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rufe is the Allied code name for the A6M2-N float fighter. The Japanese designation corresponded to a Type 2 navy float fighter.

The real subject is a float aircraft. A large central float on struts and a pair of smaller stabilizing floats under the wing replace the wheeled landing gear.

Lining the struts of the central float up. The assembly has to be fitted on a flat surface and left to cure, otherwise the model stands crooked.

Float models are usually displayed on a stand bought separately or on a base with a water surface. Check the contents of the package on the box.
