A set of Roman soldier figures in 1:72 scale from the retro Vintage Classics range by Airfix. A basis for an ancient scene and for tabletop games.
Responsibility details are not available.
The strength of the Roman army rested on its infantry, which fought in close formation and relied on the shield, the short weapon and discipline in the line. That is exactly the picture this set offers: a group of soldiers from which a formation on the march, a defensive line or a small camp scene can be built. Antiquity is a rewarding modeling subject, because it does without complicated machinery and is told mainly through the figures, the terrain and the arrangement of the whole group.
The Vintage Classics label belongs to the retro range in which sets known from earlier years return to the line, including the period styling of the box. For collectors it means meeting a classic, for builders a straightforward way to populate a scene. The 1:72 scale is the most widespread for figures of this size, so the set is easy to supplement from other sources.
In 1:72 scale an adult comes out at roughly twenty-five millimeters, a size at which it is still worth suggesting a face and a shield but pointless to chase after buttons. Wash and degrease the figures before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold well on the smooth surface. Work from a dark base toward lighter layers and let the shadow settle in the folds. Shields take a bolder design than the rest of the figure, because they carry the colors of the whole formation.
The package contains the stated set of figures. Paints, brushes, glue and a base for the scene are not included, unless stated otherwise.
