Metallic Blue (Metallic gloss) — a 10 ml acrylic metallic paint

Metallic Blue (Metallic gloss) is a blue shade with a metallic sheen from the Aqueous Hobby Color acrylic range of the Gunze brand. The paint has a water-thinnable binder, so it is thinned with water or with an acrylic thinner of the same range and the brushes are cleaned with water right after work. The bottle holds 10 ml.

Use

• The metallic pigment settles at the bottom, so mix the paint thoroughly before every use and during the work as well.
• It looks best on a smooth, well smoothed base; every score or mark of abrasive paper will stand out.
• It is applied with a brush as well as an airbrush, but an even metallic effect is more readily achieved by spraying in thin coats.
• Metallic paints are harder to overspray and to mask, so put them in as late as possible, ideally as the final color.

What to watch out for

Gunze has three unrelated chemistries side by side: the Aqueous acrylic range, the Mr.Color lacquer range and the Acrysion acrylic range. Each is thinned with its own thinner and they are not mixed with one another. This shade belongs to the water-thinnable acrylic range, so do not use a lacquer or cellulose thinner on it. A metallic surface is more sensitive to rubbing, so once it has dried, protect it with a gloss or semi-gloss varnish compatible with acrylic.
