About product

Eduard 1:48 3D-printed engine for the FM-2 Wildcat

The set replaces the simplified plastic engine from the kit with a 3D-printed resin part. 3D printing technology makes it possible to print the thin cylinder fins, the plumbing and the small fittings in one piece, so there is no need to build the engine up from many parts and the result is markedly finer than injection-molded plastic. The item is intended for the FM-2 Wildcat model in 1:48 scale, and the manufacturer is the Czech firm Eduard. The exact number of parts and the extent of the set are stated by the manufacturer on the box.

The real subject

The FM-2 Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter with an air-cooled radial engine, derived from the older Wildcat family and intended mainly for operations from smaller escort carriers. Compared with earlier versions it received a lighter airframe and a more powerful engine, so it coped better with a short deck. It is precisely the radial engine that is very clearly visible on the model through the open front cowling, and that is why replacing it with a detailed part shows in the result more than it does on aircraft whose engine is hidden inside a cowling.

Building and painting tips

First wash the part in lukewarm soapy water or in alcohol so that any uncured print resin residue disappears; without that the paint will not hold. Cut the 3D print supports off with a fine-toothed saw or a fine disc, and never snap them off. Sand wet and with breathing protection. It is glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate glue, as cement for plastic does not attack resin. The engine is rewarding to paint: a base of a dark metal shade, then a dry brush to bring out the cylinder fins and finally a dark wash into the shadows. Try the part dry inside the engine cowling before you glue anything.

Who the accessory is for

  • Modelers who build the FM-2 Wildcat in 1:48 scale with the engine cowling open.
  • More experienced modelers with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate glue.
  • Builders of display models, where the engine is examined at close range.
  • Those who want a marked improvement in detail from a single part instead of building the engine up from many.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a stand-alone 3D-printed engine that replaces the part in an FM-2 Wildcat plastic kit you have already bought.

Cut them off with a fine-toothed saw or a fine disc and sand the surface wet. Snapping them off will damage the part.

The effect will then hardly show. The set makes the most sense on a model with the engine cowling open or hinged back.

The exact number of parts is stated by the manufacturer on the box of the set.
