A resin accessory from the Quickboost brand, made by Aires Hobby Models. It represents the protective covers that are fitted over the intakes, sensors and other openings of an aircraft parked on the apron, so that no dirt or foreign object gets into them. The covers carry conspicuous Remove Before Flight flags, which remind the ground crew that the covers must be taken off before flight. The set is intended for British Phantoms in 1:48 scale and does not replace a kit - the kit is the base onto which the accessory is fitted.
British Phantoms differed clearly from the American versions. The Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force operated them in versions with Rolls-Royce Spey engines, which called for wider and deeper air intakes and a modified rear fuselage. The aircraft served in the fighter role as well as in the strike and reconnaissance roles. Protective covers and flags are exactly the detail that immediately tells a model of an aircraft in service on the apron from one in the air.
First wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, holding the small parts in your hand or in tweezers so that they do not fly off. They are bonded with super glue, and once it has set, apply a primer. The covers are usually sprayed in a conspicuous color so that they are visible on the aircraft, and the flags are usually red with white lettering. The lettering is done either with a very fine brush or with enclosed or separately bought decals; the package contents are given on the packaging. A model with covers looks best as part of a scene with ground equipment and crew.
This is an accessory, not an aircraft kit. Paints, glue and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
