Painting masks for a model of the Il-76 transport aircraft in 1:144 scale, prepared for the corresponding Zvezda kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Ilyushin Il-76 came about as an answer to a requirement to carry equipment even to airfields without a paved runway. A high-set wing with four turbofan engines, a cargo ramp in the tail and landing gear with twenty wheels took it onto the unprepared surfaces of Siberia and into African deserts. In versions with higher thrust it served as a tanker, a firefighting aircraft and a flying hospital, and a number of the machines fly to this day.
The glazing of this type is especially laborious, because besides the pilots' cockpit the fuselage also has a navigator's station in the nose. Tape cut by hand is hard to shape to its curvature and the frames then do not come out symmetrical. A pre-cut mask copies the shape and the builder can concentrate on the paint.
It pays to apply a base layer in the color of the inner frames first, because under a light top shade the transparency of the plastic would show through. Press the edges of the mask down with a toothpick, not with a fingernail, or the mask will bend and the paint will run underneath. When finished, let the paint flash off and remove the mask by pulling along the edge, not perpendicular to the surface. If paint has after all run under the mask, let it cure completely and scrape the excess away with the point of a wooden toothpick. Solvent would do more harm than good in this place, because it dulls the surrounding clear surface and that can no longer be put right.
