The grilles the tank breathes through

Cooling was a perpetual theme on the Churchill. Air was drawn in along the sides of the hull and driven around a twelve-cylinder engine that had been created by coupling a pair of inline truck sixes and that suffered from heat in the cramped space. The protective grilles above the intakes therefore received a dense grid, which prevented a grenade being thrown in and splinters getting in, while putting as little resistance as possible in the way of the airflow.

What you get over and above the plastic

On an injection molded part the grid is usually only suggested by engraving into a solid surface, so that looking from above produces no depth at all. The printed replacement is pierced right through, a shadow forms beneath it and the surface stops looking like a blind plate. The difference is apparent above all on models built for a stand, where a viewer looks at the upper surface of the hull most often.

Building and painting

Cut the plastic part out with a fine-toothed saw and clean the opening in the hull up so that the replacement seats flush. Support the fragile mesh along its whole length until the glue sets. It pays to paint it from underneath in a dark shade, and only then to go lightly over the edges of the grid from above with a dry brush. Dust and fallen leaves lodge in grilles, which is a rewarding opportunity for pigment.

The name does not give a specific target kit; the dimensions suit ordinary Churchill models in 1:35 scale.

With British tanks it is the upper surface that catches a collector's eye, because the greatest number of technical features meet there in the smallest space. An honestly pierced mesh above the intakes is the most striking change that can be made there with a single part. Before closing the hull up, slip a piece of card painted black underneath it, so that the view does not end on a bare shell.
