A matte red from the water-thinnable Hobby Color line. A shade for national insignia, warning stripes and signal areas on equipment.

Red is one of the colors that always demands attention on real equipment. In a military context, it marks anything hazardous or not to be overlooked: propeller blade tips, fire extinguishers, hydraulic circuit caps, seat safety pins, stripes on weapon pylons, and areas exposed when speed brakes deploy. In civilian life, it is carried by fire trucks, tractors, farm equipment and postal vehicles.
A matte finish matters for a model more than it might seem. A gloss red on a small area fools the eye, and it reads as toy plastic. A matted surface scatters light diffusely, holds the stated shade even under direct lighting, and readily takes a wash afterward that highlights panel lines and rivets without any further preparation.
This is a water-based acrylic paint, which can be thinned with the matching thinner from the same line, or with plain water for hand application. With an airbrush it can be sprayed heavily thinned, building up the shade gradually coat by coat; with a brush it is applied a bit thicker.
Red pigment covers worse than any other color. Over a dark surface it comes out brownish, and on bare plastic it comes out blotchy. The solution is a light gray or pink base, over which full saturation is reached with two thin coats instead of one thick one. Small areas like propeller tips are best done with precise masking, since few people can manage a sharp transition by hand. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, or the settled pigment will leave a grainy film on the surface.
