This injection-molded plastic kit from the manufacturer Tamiya in 1:35 scale captures the German four-barrel 20 mm Flakvierling 38 anti-aircraft gun together with the Sd.Ah.52 transport trailer. You can therefore build the gun loaded for transport, or set down on the ground in a firing position. The barrels, the sights, the magazines, the control handwheels and the foot pedals are reproduced with the usual Tamiya precision, and the aiming gear allows elevation and traverse. Crew figures are also included in the box, so the model will serve as a display piece on its own and as the centerpiece of a diorama.
The Flakvierling 38 came about by coupling four 20 mm Flak 38 automatic cannons into a single mount with a high rate of fire. The weapon was among the most feared assets of German anti-aircraft defense of the Second World War: the fast-firing quartet of barrels was the terror of low-flying fighters and attack aircraft, and it was used just as effectively against ground targets, infantry and lightly armored vehicles. The mount was carried on a special Sd.Ah.52 trailer, from which it could be quickly taken down and brought to readiness to fire; besides standing positions, the Flakvierling was also mounted on the chassis of half-tracks and trucks. It was committed on every front right up to the end of the war.
Use liquid cement for polystyrene on the joints, because it runs into the joint by capillary action and leaves no excess. Clean the fine parts of the mount and the barrels of any sprue remains and mold seams first. Apply a primer before painting, so that the paint holds and the details show. An airbrush and a basic German camouflage (dark yellow, with stripes or blotches of green and brown if you like) are ideal, followed by washes into the recesses and edge highlighting with a dry brush. Darken the bores of the barrels and the ammunition magazines with metallic shades and soot; dust the trailer chassis and the feet of the mount with pigments, so that the model looks used.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
