The set is from the ATOM range and brings together the shades for unpainted metal surfaces on aircraft. It is one of the most demanding subjects a modeler can meet on an aircraft: bare metal is not one color but a mosaic. Neighboring panels were of different alloys, aged differently and reflect the light differently, so a convincing surface only comes about by laying several close shades side by side.
The undercoat decides the result more than in any other kind of painting. Metallic shades hide nothing; on the contrary they bring out every scratch, fingerprint and unsanded joint, so smooth the surface first and unify it with a smooth gloss base. Apply the paint in thin coats and let them go tacky; a heavy coat loses its sheen. Set the panels apart by masking and a slight variation of the shades, but stay with close tones, otherwise the model looks like a chessboard. Use the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging; metallic shades tend to be more sensitive to thinning than ordinary opaque paints.
A dried metallic surface scuffs easily, so handle the model over a mat or with gloves. Choose masking tape that is as little tacky as possible and press it onto the back of your hand before use, so that it loses part of its adhesive. Let the paint dry properly before further coats; with metallic shades, haste takes the greatest revenge.
The set is meant for builders of aircraft from the period when machines flew without paint, and for anyone who wants the metallic shades together in one set. A model, thinner and spraying equipment are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
