What the material is for

Grass growth is the first thing by which the eye tells whether a scene is alive or merely painted. Green scenic material is settled onto finished terrain and gives it a texture that paint alone can never achieve: the surface stops being smooth, it starts to cast small shadows and the model finally stands in a landscape rather than on a board.

What the name says about the shade

Middle green is the basic tone of grasses in full season, that is, a green without the yellow burn of summer and without the gray of autumn. That is exactly why it suits the main area, onto which variations are then added. On its own it looks monotonous, so it pays to mix in a little drier and a little darker green, above all where in reality there would be shade or damp. The material is not tied to one scale; with the size of the model only how densely and in how large areas you spread it changes.

How to work with it

• Paint the area in an earth shade first, because bare surface showing through gives the scene away.
• Settle the material onto glue, most often PVA or a product intended for scenic materials.
• Work in irregular clumps, because a continuous even carpet looks artificial.
• Tap off or vacuum the excess once it has dried, because taking away is easier than adding.
• Leave the edges of roads and ruts thin, because grass there tends to be trodden down.
• The form of the package, its volume and the recommended way of fixing it are given by the manufacturer on the packaging.

The scenic material itself is supplied. A board, terrain material, glue, a model and paints are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
