The 1:12 scale puts this item among the largest models COBI makes: the finished car is considerably bigger than the usual brick-built car kits and comes across more as a showpiece for a shelf than as a toy for a child's room.
The Trabant 601 was a small passenger car built in Zwickau in East Germany. It stayed in production from the mid-1960s until the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, a remarkably long run on a single basic design. It was powered by an air-cooled two-stroke twin driving the front wheels, the body sat on a steel skeleton and the outer panels were of Duroplast — a pressed material of cotton fibers and resin that did not corrode. It was precisely this combination of simplicity, low weight and easy repair that made the Trabant one of the best-known cars of its day and, now, a sought-after classic. The designation 601 S refers to one of the trim versions of the range.
Work on a level, well-lit surface and sort the pieces into bowls by size in advance — with a large model that saves the most time. Follow the order in the instructions exactly; on a brick-built body every layer you skip shows up only several steps later. The finished model deserves a display case, or at least a shelf out of direct sunlight, because colored plastic fades in the light over time. Dust comes off the model best with a soft brush or with compressed air at low pressure.
The kit is assembled from plastic bricks that click into place. Glue and paints are not needed and are not included in the package.
