A sheet of waterslide decals intended for a model of the Convair C-131 Samaritan military transport and medical aircraft in 1:144 scale. The package holds decals only; the kit itself has to be obtained separately. Caracal Models is an American brand that concentrates on decal sheets for less common types and on period-accurate markings.
The C-131 Samaritan was the military counterpart of the civil twin-engined Convair 240 to 440 series airliner. It was powered by two radial piston engines, had a pressurized cabin and nosewheel landing gear. In service it was used to carry people, for staff flights and above all for the medical evacuation of the wounded, which is where its name comes from. The US Navy operated related machines under its own designation, which was later unified into a single series. Thanks to its reliability the type stayed in active service for an exceptionally long time, and its late finishes differ markedly from the original ones.
In 1:144 scale the undercoat decides everything. Apply the decals exclusively over gloss clear coat, because a matte surface turns white under the film and the edge of the decal then forms a visible frame. Trim the film as close to the print as possible with a sharp scalpel. Add a drop of detergent to the water, leave the decal on the paper only long enough for it to come free, and transfer it to a dampened spot. Settle it with decal softener; on aircraft with corrugated transitions and riveted strips use a stronger type and let it work without interference. Finally overcoat with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat, which hides the edges of the film for good.
The package holds decals only. The model, glue, paints and clear coats are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
