About product

Masking set 1:144 De Havilland Sea Venom (Peewit)

A masking set in 1:144 scale for the carrier-borne version of the De Havilland Venom, that is the Sea Venom. The name covers several designations at once: the FAW.21 and FAW.22 in British naval service, the FAW.53 in the Australian form, the ECM.21 reconnaissance and jamming conversion and the TT.53 target-towing version. The set holds pre-cut masking shapes for the glazing and is used before spraying, so the cockpit frames come out sharp and with no touching up.

The real subject

The Sea Venom was a carrier-borne all-weather fighter aircraft with a characteristic twin-boom tail structure and a short fuselage nacelle. Unlike the single-seat Venom it had a crew of two seated side by side, so the canopy is noticeably wider and flatter. It is precisely this wide canopy with fairly dense framing that is the most unpleasant place to mask in a small scale, and that is why on this subject it pays to reach for ready-made masks. The aircraft was in service from the middle of the 1950s and its individual variants differed mainly in equipment and role, not in outline.

How to use the set

First wash the glazing and let it dry completely so the mask adheres. Transfer the mask, press it down and smooth the edges with a blunt tool. The recommended procedure is to spray the frame in the color of the interior, then the primer and only then the camouflage. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has dried and preferably at a sharp angle, not straight up. On twin-boom aircraft take care that overspray does not run into the joint of the nacelle and the wing, where it is then difficult to put right.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of carrier-borne aircraft of the 1950s in 1:144 scale.
  • Modelers who want the frame of the wide two-seat cockpit cleanly set apart.
  • Those who do not want to cut tape by hand in a small scale.
  • Collectors of British naval aviation hardware.

This is an accessory for building. The kit of the aircraft, paints and glue are not included in the package. Please check the match with your kit beforehand.

FAQ

They are the individual variants of the Sea Venom. The FAW.21 and FAW.22 are the British all-weather fighter versions, the FAW.53 the Australian one, the ECM.21 a conversion for electronic warfare and the TT.53 the target-towing version.

It is not. It is a masking set, that is an accessory for painting a model. The kit of the Sea Venom has to be obtained separately.

The Sea Venom has a two-seat cockpit with the seats side by side, so the canopy is wide and divided. In 1:144 scale such a shape is very difficult to mask by hand.

The set is intended for one model. The number of masks is stated on the packaging.
