This item is a sheet of decals for a model of the Ilyushin Il-18 airliner in 1:144 scale, not a kit. It was issued by the Hungarian brand HAD models and focused on the retro scheme of the Hungarian airline Malév of the 1960s. Models of airliners live by their markings — the fuselage is simple in shape and the decisive visual effect comes from the lines, the lettering and the registration marks. A good decal sheet therefore fills much the same role on civil models as detail accessories do on military ones.
The Il-18 was a Soviet four-engine turboprop airliner with a pressurized cabin that entered service at the end of the 1950s. It was powered by Ivchenko AI-20 engines and the type became one of the most widespread airliners of the Eastern bloc — it flew with a number of foreign carriers too, and in cargo and special versions it served for decades. The Hungarian carrier Malév was among the European operators of the type and its scheme of the day is a rewarding subject for retro models today.
The surface for a civil scheme has to be truly smooth — the white upper part of the fuselage is finished in gloss, because every irregularity under a long line stands out. Apply long bands along the fuselage in sections and keep checking that the line holds a parallel distance from the row of windows; make any correction while there is still water under the decal. Never stretch the film, as a crack cannot be put right. On the rounded transition from the fuselage to the tail, a softener and gentle pressure with a cotton bud will help. Once it is dry, coat it with gloss varnish, which hides the edges of the film.
