About product

Mark I 1:144 RAAF Type A roundels with a thin ring — a decal sheet

A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:144 scale with the roundels of the Royal Australian Air Force from the period of the Second World War, specifically in the Type A variant with a thin ring. According to the name it holds six sizes, 18, 24, 30, 36, 48 and 54 inches, and that in two sets. Converted into the scale that is roughly 3.2 to 9.5 mm. It is not a kit but an accessory to a model that is already finished.

Why the width of the ring matters

Roundels were not sprayed to a single drawing on every aircraft and throughout the whole of their service. The width of the white ring differs according to the period, according to the aircraft manufacturer and according to the workshop practice of the unit, and it is exactly that detail that makes a big difference on a finished model: a roundel with a narrow ring looks optically smaller and darker than the same roundel with a thick one. Mark I therefore issues the two variants separately and the modeler chooses according to the particular subject. The difference between this sheet and the variant with the thick ring is thus given by the name.

Application tips

The six sizes are not accidental: two or three different diameters commonly appear on one aircraft, the largest on the lower surfaces of the wings, the medium on the upper ones and the smallest on the fuselage. Before you start applying them, go through the sources for the subject and assign the diameters, so that you do not then reach for the nearest size. The application itself: a gloss varnish on the surface, a close trim at the printing, a brief soak, sliding onto a layer of water and centering by a panel line. On the large roundels on the wing, press the water out from the center so that no bubble is left under the film. A softener over engraving and riveting, and a unifying matte varnish once dry.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of Australian aircraft of the Second World War in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want the matching ring width according to a particular subject
  • Those who need several sizes of roundel on one machine
  • Builders of a series of models, as the sheet holds two sets

This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and varnish are not included in the package.

FAQ

They are inches of the real diameter of the roundel, as the name gives them. In 1:144 scale that corresponds to roughly 3.2 mm for the smallest and 9.5 mm for the largest.

In the width of the white ring, as follows from the names of the two sheets. A roundel with a thin ring looks optically smaller.

As a rule yes. The roundels on the lower surfaces of the wings tend to be the largest, those on the upper surfaces smaller and those on the fuselage the smallest. Assign the diameters according to the sources for the particular subject.

No. It is a stand-alone decal sheet for finishing a model that is already built and painted.
