About product

1:16 Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. F2 wheel masking set (Quickwheel)

Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the German Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. F2 version, in the large 1:16 scale. This is not a kit or a replacement part — the masks merely mark out the area of the rubber tire band so it can be sprayed separately from the rim. The set is cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with a kit from another manufacturer the wheel diameters may differ, so check the match.

What is special about the running gear of the Ausf. F2

The chassis is of the same family as on the later versions: eight small road wheels on each side in four bogies sprung on leaf springs, the drive sprocket at the front, the idler wheel at the rear. The difference from the late versions is essential for painting, though. The Ausf. F2 is an early variant, and in its day return rollers with a rubber tire band were still in common use — on the later machines there was a move to an all-steel design. On this vehicle, then, you are dealing with a rubber circumference not only on the road wheels but usually on the rollers above as well, and those are clearly visible in the view from the side. In this state the vehicle also does not yet have add-on plates on its sides, so the whole assembly stays exposed.

What the mask prevents

The commonest mistake on an early Pz.Kpfw. IV is to overlook the return rollers: the modeler carefully lines eight road wheels per side and leaves the rollers in one color, because they are automatically taken for steel. The second mistake is one of craft — a small wheel is easier to line in 1:16 than in a small scale, but that is exactly what tempts you into haste and into paint too thick, which runs over the edge. The third is painting the wheels already fitted in the bogies, where the inner faces are out of reach. A mask fixes the border whether you are painting the first wheel or the last, and lets you concentrate on what really is a decision: which parts had rubber and which did not.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German Second World War equipment in the large scale
  • Modelers building the early version with an exposed running gear
  • Those who do not want to line the wheels and the rollers by hand
  • Airbrush users painting the running gear before the bogies are assembled

This is a masking aid, not a model. Neither paints nor the kit are included in the package. Go by the details on the box for the contents of the sheet.

FAQ

The sets are cut for individual kits and versions. On the early variant the return rollers also tend to be rubber-rimmed, whereas on the late machines there was a move to all-steel ones. Check the particular contents of the sheet on the box.

In a large scale the wheel is a clearly visible part and even a slight wavering of the line is spotted. There are also sixteen wheels per model, so the last wheel rarely comes out like the first.

Do not rely on it. The set is cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with another kit, try the fit dry.
