About product

1:16 Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H and J wheel masking set (Quickwheel)

Self-adhesive masks for painting the running gear of the German Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. H and J versions, in the large 1:16 scale. The set holds no part of the model — it serves to produce the same sharply bordered rubber area on every wheel. The masks are cut for the kit from Trumpeter; another kit may have wheels of a different diameter and the mask would not line up.

What is special about the running gear of the Pz.Kpfw. IV

The Pz.Kpfw. IV has eight small road wheels on each side, grouped in pairs into four bogies sprung on leaf springs, with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear. Sixteen wheels on one model is plenty of work in itself, but the scale is what decides: in 1:16 the wheel is a large part that the viewer examines close up, and the border of the rubber ends up in a position where nothing can be hidden behind the smallness of the detail. On the late versions there was also a move to all-steel return rollers with no rubber — before you start painting, check what rollers your assembly has, so you do not darken a circumference where there was no rubber at all. The sides of the vehicle may be covered by add-on armor plates; those hide only a part, though, and the view from the front and the rear falls on the wheels all the same.

What the mask prevents

In a large scale precisely the mistake that passes in 1:35 makes itself felt: a faintly wavering line. What is below the resolving power of the eye in a small scale is a distinct wave in 1:16. The second typical problem is fatigue — by the sixteenth hand-lined wheel nobody is drawing as carefully as on the first, and the difference between the first and the last wheel tends to be visible on the model. The third is an excess of paint on the brush, which a large area tempts you into applying quickly; the paint then runs over the edge and fills the transition. A mask unifies all sixteen wheels regardless of which one in the sequence you happen to be painting.

Who the set is for

  • Builders in the large 1:16 scale, where every detail is in view
  • Modelers building German Second World War equipment
  • Those who do not want to line sixteen wheels by hand on one model
  • Airbrush users painting the running gear before the bogies are assembled

This is a masking aid, not a model. Neither paints nor the kit are included in the package. Go by the details on the box for the contents of the sheet.

FAQ

In 1:16 the wheel is a large part and the viewer looks at it close up. A wavering line that would disappear in a small scale is clearly visible here.

On the later versions there was a move to all-steel rollers with no rubber. Check from your kit which variant you are building and apply a dark circumference only where the rubber really was.

That is not guaranteed. The masks are cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with another kit, try the fit dry before you stick the mask down.
