The Boeing 737-500 is the shortest variant of the so-called classic 737 family, powered by a pair of turbofan engines with characteristically flattened nacelles. With its smaller seating capacity it suited shorter regional routes with lower demand. In Japan these machines served for a number of years on domestic routes, and the nickname Super Dolphin with its striking dolphin graphic on the fuselage was among the identifying marks of the whole fleet. With airliners it is above all the quality of the surface that counts: the fuselage is glued from halves and the seam along its whole length has to disappear. Glue with thin cement by capillary action, then fill the seam and sand it through several grits to a high smoothness. Follow the primer with a base coat sprayed with an airbrush in thin coats; metallic or pearl shades on the lower fuselage call for a genuinely smooth surface. Apply gloss varnish before the decals, settle the large decal areas with a softener and varnish over them once they have dried. Mask the windows and the transition areas carefully; in this scale the details are small and any inaccuracy shows at once.
