About product

Kure Naval Port in 1:3000 scale, a diorama set from Fujimi

This is not a model of a single ship but a diorama base. The injection-molded plastic set represents the areas and installations of the naval base at Kure in the small 1:3000 scale and serves as a setting into which a modeler places ships of the same scale. The edition is licensed to the animated film In This Corner of the World, whose story takes place in Kure and its surroundings, and carries the designation of the Aoba version. The composition of the parts is stated on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

Kure, in Hiroshima Prefecture, was one of the main naval arsenals of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was a combination of a naval port and a shipyard with dry docks, cranes, workshops and storage facilities, that is a place where ships were built, moored and repaired. The 1:3000 scale is deliberate for a subject of this kind: it can capture a whole harbor panorama with several vessels at once, while the individual elements of armament are already simplified to a silhouette.

Building and painting tips

Build the set on a firm base so that the surfaces do not warp. Concrete quays and embankments look best in a light gray shade, which can be brought to life with a dry brush and fine dust pigment in the joints. Glue the cranes and small structures with thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush; on the thinnest parts cyanoacrylate glue will help. Modelers usually make the water surface separately, most often from acrylic gel or a varnished base. At a scale this small it pays to lighten the colors rather than darken them, otherwise the whole thing looks dark and loses its legibility.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of ship models in 1:3000 scale who want to place their ships in a setting.
  • For makers of harbor dioramas and cabinet scenes.
  • For collectors of licensed editions tied to animated work.
  • For modelers who get on with very small parts.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a model of a ship. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a diorama set of harbor areas and installations, which serves as a base and setting for ship models in 1:3000 scale.

The Aoba version designation refers to a particular release of the edition. The composition of the parts is stated on the box and in the instructions.

It is a very small ship scale in which a whole harbor and several vessels at once can be captured in a small area. The detail is simplified and the emphasis falls on the overall silhouette.

A water surface is not included and modelers usually make it themselves, most often from acrylic gel or a varnished base.
