A diorama accessory from the Japanese brand Fujimi, which serves as a base with the relief of the sea surface for miniature ship models in 1:3000 scale. It is not a model of a ship but a panel on which the vessels are displayed and with which an existing scene can be extended. The dimensions of the panel, the number of pieces in the package and the way they join to further panels are stated on the box and in the instructions.
The 1:3000 scale exists so that a whole formation of vessels fits into a cabinet, not a single ship. It is exactly here that a water surface makes the most sense: models placed on a common base read as a fleet under way rather than as a row of separate exhibits. The expansion panel is conceived so that it can be added gradually, so you can extend the collection as further vessels or whole sets come along. It is also used under models of harbor scenes, which Fujimi likewise puts out at this scale.
The water surface is best colored in gradations: a darker blue-green tone into the troughs of the waves and a lighter hint on their crests. A dry brush with white or a very light color will bring out the foam on the crests. It pays to make the transitions with an airbrush, because over a large area every sharp division shows. A final gloss or satin coat will give the water a wet look. If you join panels together, make sure the seam falls into a wave and not onto a smooth area, where it would be conspicuous.
The panel is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a model of a ship, and the vessels, glue and paints are not included in the package.
