A large format decal sheet for the four engine Boeing B-17G bomber in the finish the surviving example 44-83872 with the fuselage code VP-X still wears today. Full colors, scale 1:32.
Responsibility details are not available.
The machine with serial number 44-83872 came off the assembly line in Long Beach in the summer of 1945, that is at a moment when the firing over Europe had long fallen silent. It therefore never reached combat. It found a second life with the US Navy: as a PB-1W patrol aircraft it carried a bulky radar cover under the fuselage and the marking VP-X on the fin. In 1967 the Commemorative Air Force took it over and made it the very first four engine bomber in its airworthy collection. Under the name Texas Raiders it then belonged for decades to the handful of Fortresses that could be seen in the air.
The printing is prepared for a large scale, so even small warning placards and lettering around the entry doors stay sharp and legible. The carrier film is thin and colorless, the colors are fully opaque, so a shade holds on an aluminum as well as an olive base.
Polish the base to a smooth gloss before starting. On matte paint air is trapped under the film and a silvery border appears around a marking that can no longer be removed. Once the markings are dry, go over them with matte or satin varnish according to how well preserved you want the surface to look.
