A sheet 1:32 for two Mitchells flying today, the gun-armed version H nicknamed Berlin Express and the later machine J nicknamed Dumbo.
Responsibility details are not available.
Of the thousands of Mitchells built, only a handful remain in operation and each of them has admirers of its own. This sheet is aimed exactly at them. It contains the markings of a twin-engine machine of the B-25H-1 series, which carries the number 6N on the fuselage and the nickname Berlin Express, and with it the guise of a later B-25J with the nickname Dumbo and the number 6V. Both belong today to private operators, fly at air shows, and their finishes are based on wartime patterns, though the restorers have brought them into a form the aircraft need not have had in any particular year.
The substantive difference between the two versions is visible straight away on the nose. The H series had a solid nose with the barrel of a heavy cannon, whereas the J series returned to the glazed navigator's position. Before buying a kit it is therefore worth checking which of the two variants the plastic subject actually represents, otherwise half the sheet will be left unused.
Part of the markings are civil registrations, which wartime machines never carried. Anyone building the aircraft as a museum exhibit in its present-day state places them on the rear part of the fuselage according to photographs. Anyone aiming at the wartime guise, by contrast, leaves the registrations out and keeps only the tactical numbers. It is advisable to decide before building, because the two guises also differ in the shade of the base finish and in the degree of its wear.
The set is intended to complete a finished model and contains no plastic parts. Count on the fact that the printing holds worse on a polished aluminum surface than on matte paint, and that a thin layer of gloss clear therefore belongs under it.
