Painting masks for a large model of the Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4. The set masks the cockpit glazing from the outer and the inner face and is complemented by a pair of national insignia stencils.
Responsibility details are not available.
On the Friedrich version the fuselage behind the cockpit stopped being angular. The rear fixed section of the glazing blends into the decking in a soft curve that the older Emils still lacked, and together with the rounded wingtips it gives the aircraft its typically flowing outline. The Bf 109F-4 with the DB 601E engine and a cannon firing through the propeller hub was among the best fighters on the Eastern Front in 1942.
The rounded rear section is more treacherous to mask than the front windscreen. A straight edge can be managed even with a sharp knife and a strip of tape, but a curve has to be run round in a single stroke, otherwise small spikes arise that the finish emphasizes. Cut masks have this curve ready and add a counterpart for the inner face, so that with the canopy open no bare transparent bar is visible.
The remaining pair of masks is intended for the national markings. Against a decal, spraying has the advantage that the paint follows the texture of the surface and nowhere is there a lead-in of glossy film. It also allows the insignia to be colored a little differently from how it looks on a decal sheet, which suits machines photographed after being repainted in the field. The work saved is considerable: in a large scale the boundary between the fuselage cover and the glass is tens of centimeters long.
The set does not replace preparing the part. If the clear section is cloudy or scratched from the mold, the mask will only emphasize it, because it separates the clean glass from the paint sharply. Before it goes on it therefore pays to polish the part and let it dry completely. It also holds that a very fine mist of paint holds on the edge of a mask better than one heavy coat.
