About product

Aviattic 1:32, a four-color lozenge tail for the Fokker D.VII (OAW)

This Aviattic decal sheet is intended for the tail surfaces of the Fokker D.VII from the licensed production of OAW (Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke) and carries a four-color lozenge pattern filled out with rib tapes cut from the same pattern. The print on a clear decal backing captures the fine structure of the cloth; you tune the final tone of the pattern with the color of the base, which makes it possible to achieve either a factory-fresh or a service-worn look.

The real subject

OAW, the Albatros subsidiary at Schneidemühl, was one of the two licensed makers of the Fokker D.VII, and its machines differed from the production of Fokker and of Albatros in a number of small ways, typically in the style of the painting of the engine panels or in the treatment of the rib tapes. For a modeler the maker's designation is a guide to building a particular documented machine, because the works number and the details of the covering are closely linked. The D.VII itself was rated the best German fighter in 1918 and served in large numbers right to the end of the war.

Application tips

Spray the base uniformly, light and to a gloss. Transfer the segments of the sheet one at a time, settle them with softener and let them pull into the raised detail of the covering. Orient the tapes cut from the lozenge pattern the same way as the base pattern, so that the drawing looks natural. Once dry, close everything with a satin or matte clear coat; a fine oil wash will then bring out the texture of the fabric.

Who the sheet is for

  • builders of the Fokker D.VII in 1:32 who are modeling a machine of OAW production
  • modelers of the First World War with an interest in the differences between licensed makers
  • advanced builders who want the texture of printed fabric instead of spraying

This is a decal accessory, not a kit: the model, the paints and the glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke, an Albatros subsidiary and one of the two licensed makers of the Fokker D.VII. The machines of the individual makers differed in details of workmanship.

The details of the covering, the rib tapes and the painting differed between Fokker, Albatros and OAW. If you want to build a particular documented aircraft, the sheet should match its maker.

Onto a uniform glossy base, segment by segment, with softener. Apply the rib tapes once the main areas are dry and clear coat the whole at the end.

No, the sheet covers the tail surfaces; separate sheets of the same range follow on for the rest of the airframe.
