The set holds photo-etched pilot's seat belts for a model of the Mirage 2000C in 1:32 scale. The STEEL designation means that the parts are etched from steel instead of the usual brass. Steel holds its shape better once bent, so the belts can be convincingly draped over the edge of the seat or left lying loose in the cockpit without straightening themselves out. The parts are printed in color, so the laborious painting falls away. It is not a model or a complete interior but a targeted detail. They are made by Eduard of the Czech Republic, from Obrnice near Most.
The Mirage 2000C is a French single-seat fighter with a delta wing and one jet engine. Compared with the earlier generation of French deltas it brought a fly-by-wire control system, which keeps an unstable airframe under control and markedly improved agility. It served as the main interceptor and fighter type of the French Air Force and was exported to a number of other countries. In 1:32 scale the cockpit is large and open to view, so the seat with its belts is among the first places where the difference between a plastic part and fine detail shows.
Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface, and never snap them off. Steel is stiffer than brass, so make the folds slowly and preferably over the edge of a pair of tweezers or in a bending tool. You get a natural sag by drawing the strap gently over a rounded tool a few times, for example over the handle of a scalpel. They are glued with a small drop of cyanoacrylate; wipe any excess off at once so that it does not dull the printing. At the end it is a good idea to tie the color printing in with its surroundings using a weak wash into the folds, and a little silver can be applied to the edges to suggest chipping.
This is an accessory, not a model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
