This item is a set of photo-etched metal parts for the landing gear of the 1:32 Douglas A-26B Invader plastic model, made by the Czech manufacturer Eduard. Unlike the CX, EX and JX masking lines, which only serve for painting, this is a full etch: the parts stay on the model permanently and replace or supplement the plastic components. A full etch differs from pre-painted Zoom sets in that the parts are supplied in bare metal and are painted once they are on the model, while covering a wider part of the build. The set is not a standalone airplane model, it is an accessory to a kit you already own.
The A-26B Invader was a twin-engine all-metal attack aircraft with retractable tricycle landing gear. The gear bays on this type were roomy and full of structural stiffeners, hydraulic lines and wiring. That is exactly the kind of detail injection-molded plastic cannot reproduce faithfully — the bay walls come out smooth and far too thick.
Photo-etched parts are used where plastic physically cannot have the correct thickness. Cut the parts from the fret with a scalpel on a hard surface, not with sprue cutters, which bend the metal. Sand the remains of the tab down with a needle file. Degrease the metal with alcohol or acetone before gluing and do not touch it with bare fingers. Make straight folds in a bending tool or between two razor blades and shape curves over a cylindrical rod. Thicker parts that resist can be briefly annealed over a flame until they darken and then left to cool — the metal softens and stops springing back. They are bonded with super glue, ideally the gel type, applied drop by drop with a pin; larger areas hold better with a slower-setting epoxy. A primer is necessary before painting, otherwise the paint will not stick to the smooth metal.
